Holistic and Natural Rearing breeders use a raw food diet to build a strong immune system in their pups. This includes finely shredded (micro-plane) organic carrots, Organic unrefined, cold pressed, extra virgin Coconut oil at 1 tsp per 10 lbs of body weight and can be added to their food. I put the carrots in their food, give pumpkin seeds with breakfast and coconut oil with dinner.

If you live in a particularly heavily infested area, essential oil topical sprays are good additions to the above. You can make diy sprays to use – all of this way better than the toxic pesticides that are in those commercial flea/tick products.
